A farm does not attain sustainability solely on its high ranking with regard to one or a few economic or ecological indicators. A realistic index of sustainability must take into accounts factors such as socio- economic conditions of the family and the natural resources that the farm directly or indirectly interacts with. Such an estimate helps to identify the weaknesses of the farm and to rectify them.
Estimation of the absolute value of sustainability for a farm is impossible because it is not yet a well – defined parameter like area of land or volume of water. Moreover, Perceptions of people with regard to sustainability vary, for example, a person may assign a sustainability value of 8.0 out of a maximum 10 to a farm growing three different species. But another person may want to see the farm grow at least ten different species for it to earn a value of 8.0 similarly, some may assign greater importance to ecological sustainability while others may stress on economic sustainability. There are also people who hold the view that cannot be economic sustainability without ecological sustainability.
