Promotion of “Drought proofing agriculture”

1. Stop GMOs in agriculture
2. Start Farmers Welfare Department
3. Making “agriculture profession” among youth
4. Promotion of “Drought proofing agriculture” with watershed concepts
5. support good price for all crops
6. Involve “more youths” in agriculture (create programs)
7. Minimize funding for SAUs and Research Institutes
8. Promote ecological/organic/sustainable farming
9. Promotion of community seed banks and kitchen-herbal garden across all GP
10. Promote TBFS agriculture

Melia Dubia Cultivation

Melia dubia are generally propagated by seeds itself by direct sowing or by planting out seedlings or stumps. Close to 85% germination may be expected in the first 2 months. Propagation of melias dubia through vegetative means is difficult but can be done. Melia Dubia is a fast growing tree. The nutrients requirement for Melia Dubia has not been worked out but research is underway. However it is being grown in different climatic and soil condition in India. Some farmers have applied chemical fertilizers whereas some others have not applied any fertilizers. The tree invariably comes up well irrespective of application of chemical fertilizers.” “The remarkable difference noticed in growth of melia dubia is when irrigation is used during summer and soil organic matter percentage is high. Further it is understood from the study of melia dubia in farmers’ fields that the response of the melia dubia to synthetic chemical fertilizers is not remarkable, whereas soil organic matter and soil depth is enough to allow fast establishment of roots.”

Some important tips

1. Enough water through rainfall or irrigation or drip
2. No water logging; drainage is important very much necessary id water logging occurs
3. Soil should be rich in organic matter –  addition to soil through FYM, vermi-compost, or other compost
4. Addition of VAM, azospirillum, phosphobacteria, and speudomonas. t.viride is advocated as it has long term impact
5. Inter-crop of leguminous family may be recommended during early years
6. Instead of synthetic chemical as nutrients, organic nutrient play a vital role in fast growth of melia dubia with quality timely yield in about 9-10 years
7. If soil is marginal and poor in terms of soil organic matter and nutrients, shallow depth of soil and water problem, then it is advocated to supply abundant quantity of organic matter in any form available in your location and NPK mixture at the rate of 25-50 grams per tree, two times, during onset of monsoon
8. Study your location and devise you nutrient application accordingly

Use of Organic Manure

“Since the organic carbon content is low, it is advisable to incorporate a lot of organic manure. Please use well decomposed sheep manure, poultry manure, vermicompost. All these are known to have high nitrogen content and will improve the plant stature gradually.

“You need to add as much natural substance as the plants need in the long run. Make your own vermi-compost. I would recommend you make a mixture of decomposed leaves and other organic matter such as sugarcane fiber and azospirillum, phospobacteria and related stuff to set the soil fertility condition. I would also recommend spraying panchagavya to these plants and see the results in 2 – 3 months. Apply jeevamirtham to the roots at once in 15-day frequency. The cost of panchagavya application to a tree will be very less compared to that of the chemical fertilizers. It also boosts the immune system of the tree and makes it drought resistant.”

Farmer Unions demand blacklisting of Mahyco as Bt. cotton fails in the state of Karnataka

Fact finding report shows failure in 18,000 hectares in Haveri and Davanagere

Farmer Union leaders and GM Free Karnataka movement today demanded that the Government of Karnataka take punitive action against Mahyco, whose Bt cotton has failed miserably once again in the state this year. This was made at a press conference in the city where a fact finding report1 was released by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leader Kodihalli Chandrashekhar. The fact finding team including Dr H.R Prakash, Cotton expert and Retd Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture, Govt of Karnataka and members of GM Free Karnataka, Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) and KRRS in the districts of Haveri and Davanagere found that there is almost 100 percentage failure of Mahyco Bt Kanaka variety where as other Bt cotton varieties were also affected.
There are 25 different brands of Bt. cotton hybrids that are being grown in the 2 districts. Of this Bt Kanaka variety of Mahyco, with stacked genes from Monsanto, the American Biotech giant, covers close to 50% of the sown cotton area. Bt. Kanaka variety is also the worst affected from Mirid bug attack with almost the entire crop not bearing bolls. There has been loses in other Bt cotton varieties also from mirid bug and other sucking pest attacks.
The fact finding report also highlighted the fact that the agriculture department in the state failed to listen to repeated warnings from studies by Dharwad Agriculture University and Central Institute of Cotton Research, Nagpur. These reports, as early as in 2007, had talked about the increasing incidence of sucking pests and especially mirid bugs in Bt. cotton in central Karnataka. The CICR study had also pointed to MRC 7351 (Bt Kanaka) being highly susceptible to Mirid Bug.
Speaking at the press conference Shri. Kodihalli Chandrashekar, Leader of KRRS, said that “it is criminal that Mahyco continued to do aggressive marketing of its Bt. cotton varieties knowing very well that the variety is susceptible to pests. It is equally tragic that the state agriculture department overlooked these early warnings and continued to promote Bt. cotton and even organised farmer melas to supply the Mahyco variety in Haveri and Dharwad.” He demanded that Mahyco be blacklisted and criminal procedures initiated against the company for playing with the lives of farmers.
According to the fact finding report the pesticide usage in the districts of Haveri and Davanagere and generally in Karnataka hasn’t seen a reduction post the release of Bt cotton in 2002. Bt cotton which has a bacterial toxin gene in it was introduced with the promise of reduction in pesticide usage in cotton. The Bt. cotton farmers in the 2 districts had to do several sprays of pesticides like Confidor-200 SL, monocrotophos-36 SL, Acephate, Dicofol, Acetamiprid (LIFT)-20 SP, Imidacloprid-200 SL and Fipronil with very little effect. The average pesticide cost per acre in the both the districts by Bt Cotton farmers ranged from Rs. 3500 to Rs. 5000.
“Bt cotton has turned out to be one of the biggest frauds that seed Industry has pulled off in our country with the able support of our policy makers and some public sector scientists” said Manjunath Holalu, Co convenor, Coalition for GM Free Karnataka, who was part of the fact finding team. He said that this has been at the cost of lives of cotton farmers who are one of the most distressed. He further stated that “there is growing scientific evidence against GM crops2. It is now proven to be bad for the farmer, the consumer, our environment and our country. The only beneficiaries seem to be companies like Monsanto who earn crores of Rupees as royalty for their proprietary genes in GM crops like Bt cotton.”
It is also noteworthy here that the fact finding team found that those farmers who grew desi cotton varieties under organic practices were not affected by the Mirid bug and other sucking pests. Data on number of bolls, height of the plant, number of harvested bolls and number of squares from each field collected showed that desi varieties like Sahana cultivated under organic practice fared much better than Bt. cotton varieties cultivated using intensive farming practices involving expensive external inputs including agro chemicals. Chandrashekhar Patil of Koonabevu village of Haveri district who grew non-GM ‘Sahana’ cotton proudly said that, “Inspite of pest attacks I could get a good harvest of cotton.  Moreover by practicing completely organic way of farming I saved money by not using external inputs like Pesticides, fertilizers and seeds”.
Addressing the press conference Shivayogi Makri of Desi Krushikara Balagademanded the government to proactively promote ecological farming using traditional seeds which have proven to be better than the Bt. hybrids, especially in rainfed regions which form the majority of cotton growing belt in the state.
Besides liability actions against Mahyco and Monsanto, who owns the Bt technology, the fact finding report has strongly recommended for the compensation of a minimum of Rs 60,000/acre for cotton farmers whose Bt cotton crop has failed and that the money be recovered from the companies like Mahyco which sold the seeds to the farmer. The report also recommended Karnataka state Government to take up a systematic programme to promote non GM cotton varieties with special focus on Open Pollinated Varieties, which could be saved and reused by farmers, as it is essential for ensuring seed sovereignty and choice of seeds. The state has also been urged to promote ecological farming which is economically, socially and ecologically sustainable in general and especially for such high risk crops like cotton.

Seed Farming makes profit

Seed farming is best option for to avoid seed monopoly by the various multi-national seed companies. It is a good economical viable activity for farmers and best solution for price fluctuation in the market

                                                                                  Manjunath H

Seeds are pivotal role in agriculture production, but farmers have no rights to exchange or sale seeds as per recent seed act. Multi National Companies (MNCs) are capitalizing seed industries, especially Monsanto, Syngenta, Mahyco and DuPont seed companies in the world. Why recent seed act not permits exchange or sale of seeds by farmers? It is purely support all seed multi-national companies. All farmers are growing crops to get income through sale of products (not the seeds) and every time farmers will buy the seeds from market. Farmers are spending lot of money to buy seeds from seed companies
Surendra N R from Nijayappanadoddi, 12 kilo meter from Ramanagara had grown traditional ladies finger (Srilanka okra) for seeds. He had three and half acre land just behind his house, cultivating various traditional paddy, finger millet and vegetables through organic farming from the last four years. He said “growing ladies finger for seed is economically viable option and easy to manage the big farm, Seed farming is best solution for price fluctuation in the market”

Seeds idea…

Surendra has taken seeds of Srilanka okra from Sadashiva after knowing the good yield from his farm. Sadashiva is also practicing organic farming from last ten years from Kottagarahalli in Magadi taluk. Surendra N R had grown Srilanka okra in quarter acre of land (10 gunta). He was planned to supply organic okra to organic outlet, but later on he changed idea of marketing green okra to outlet due to transportation problem. He treated the seeds with Beejambrutha (traditional recipe to treat any sowing seeds) before sowing in his farm.

Seeds production…

He planted two treated okra seeds in each hole in half acre land. He cultivated Srilanka okra completely on organic farming. He used 200 kilo of vermicompost as a basal dose,   then he used Jeevambrutha for three times to get crops at various intervals. He faced pest problem especially fruit borer and shoot borer to Srilanka okra. He used Poochimaddu to manage or control pest and also he over come various other sucking pests. He got fifty kilo order every week from one of the organic outlet in Bangalore, he didn’t supply because of transportation problem, and then sudden price fall in the market. He decided himself not harvest green okra.

Seeds income…

He harvested dry fruits, dried under sun for a week and then collected seeds; totally he harvested 30 kilos of Srilanka okra seeds. “It is difficult to get seeds because birds’ problem, every morning and evening we need to be in the field to protect crops from various wild birds said by Surendra N R”, he sold 20 kilo of okra seeds to Sahaja Sambrudda institute at the rate of five hundred rupees per kilo and he will get ten thousand from sale of okra seeds. He is planning to sale another ten kilo of okra seeds from his own contacts, so totally Surendra will get fifteen thousand rupees from quarter acre land. “Cleaning and making seeds from dry pod is difficult and it is laborious activity said by his mother” anybody can contact for more information 9080807024 cell number.

Sheep farming - a profitable venture for youths

Scope of Sheep farming

Sheep farming provides a dependable source of income to the young farmers through sale of wool and animals. The  multiple benefit of  sheep farming

  • Sheep do not need expensive buildings to house them and on the other hand require less labour than other kinds of livestock.
  • The foundation stock are relatively cheap and the flock can be multiplied rapidly.
  • Sheep are economical converter of grass into meat and wool.
  • Sheep will eat varied kinds of plants compared to other kind of livestock. This makes them excellent weed destroyer.
  • The production of wool, meat and manure provides three different sources of income to the young farmers.
  • The structure of their lips helps them to clean grains lost at harvest time and thus convert waste feed into profitable products.
  • It is easy enter in to agriculture through this venture to young farmers
Selection and purchase of Animal

Selection of suitable breed is important, we must know selection tips before to start

  • It is necessary to select suitable improved breed of sheep available in particular area. Breeds are Sindhanur, Deccani, Bannur, Rambully, Bellary, Hassan etc
  • Ewes (female sheep) can be purchased in regular sheep markets or from breeders in villages, while male sheep (rams)
  • It is desirable to purchase healthy animals of 12-18 months of age.
  •  A certificate regarding age and health of sheep is obtained from the veterinary assistant surgeon.
  • Sheep should be vaccinated for important diseases like sheep-fox and entero-toxaemia.
  • An entrepreneur should have a unit of 20-30 ewes and one ram
Shed for sheeps

Normally sheep do not require elaborate housing facilities but minimum provisions will definitely increase productivity, especially protection against inclement weather conditions (sun, rain and winds) and predation. Shed could be provided with gunny bags or temporary or removable protections made of thatching material and bamboos. The roof of the shed should be made of the asbestos sheet supported by tubular or angular steel, but wooden rafters and thatching material could also be used. Exotics should be provided 0.9-1.1 m2 and native and crossbred sheep 0.8-0.9 m2 space per head. Sheds measuring 18m x 6m can accommodate about 120 sheep. A chain link fencing or thorny bush enclosure of 12m x 6m can be provided for night paddocking of sheep on each side of the shed.

Management of Sheeps

Careful management of the pregnant, parturient and lactating ewes will have a marked influence on the percentage of lambs dropped and reared successfully. So, the following steps may be taken to afford proper attention to these animals.

  • Do not handle the pregnant ewes too frequently.
  • Separate the advanced pregnant ewes from the main flock and take effective care in their feeding and management.
  • Extra feed during the later part of pregnancy (3-4 weeks before parturition) will be beneficial for the condition of the pre-parturient ewes which will help in improving milk production of ewes, birth weight and growth of lambs.
  • Inadequate and poor nutrition may result in pregnancy, toxaemia, abortions and premature births of weak lambs.
  • Bring lambing ewes into lambing corals 4-6 days before parturition and provide maximum comfort. If possible, provide soft, clean bedding and individual lambing pens.
  • Watch gestation length which ranges from 142 to over 150 days. Early maturing breeds have slightly shorter gestation period.
  • Save parturient ewes from cold and chilly weather.

Economics of Sheep rearing

The following details for fifty numbers for first one year

1. Unit cost     (48+2) X 7500     = 375000/-
2. Shed cost                                 = 250000/-
3. Equipment                               = 25000/-
4. Fodder                                      = 50000/-
5. Labour                                      = 120000/-
6. Others                                       = 50000/-

Total                 = 870000/-

Net returns for every two year after one year - 7,50,000/-

The woman farmer T. Amalarani of Vasudevanallur in the district, who harvested 18,143 kg of paddy per hectare under the SRI technique, bagged the Union Government’s ‘Krishi Karman Award’ carrying the cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and received it from President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on January 15.
According to Joint Director of Agriculture K. Soundararajan, farmers across the district were being encouraged for the past few years to follow the SRI technique to get maximum yield while saving on overhead costs as well as water.

Special campaigns were being intensified to popularise the technique among the farmers after the State Government announced a cash award of Rs.5 lakh and a gold medal to those who achieve the highest paddy yield per hectare.

“As water scarcity has become a haunting issue for the farmers, they should adopt the SRI technique, which requires comparatively less water and saves alot of money for them,” the Collector noted

Grafting in brinjal (Egg plant) that gives more yield

‎10000 times stronger killer of CANCER than Chemo

‎"10000 times stronger killer of CANCER than Chemo".. do share it.. can save many lives, fill up hopes and build confidence in the patients...

The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo. Why are we not aware of this? Its because some big corporation want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.

So, since you know it now you can help a friend in need by letting him know or just drink some sour sop juice yourself as prevention from time to time. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects. If you have the space, plant one in your garden.

The other parts of the tree are also useful. The next time you have a fruit juice, ask for a sour sop. How many people died in vain while this billion-dollar drug maker concealed the secret of the miraculous Graviola tree? This tree is low and is called graviola ! in Brazi l, guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name soursop” in English. The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

The principal interest in this plant is because of its strong anti-cancer effects. Although it is effective for a number of medical conditions, it is its anti tumor effect that is of most interest. This plant is a proven cancer remedy for cancers of all types.

Besides being a cancer remedy, graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

If there ever was a single example that makes it dramatically clear why the existence of Health Sciences Institute is so vital to Americans like you, it’s the incredible story behind the Graviola tree.. The truth is stunningly simple: Deep within the Amazon Rainforest grows a tree that could literally revolutionize what you, your doctor, and the rest of the world thinks about cancer treatment and chances of survival. The future has never looked more promising. Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may be possible to:

* Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss

* Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections

* Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment

* Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life

The source of this information is just as stunning: It comes from one of America ‘s largest drug manufacturers, th! e fruit of over 20 laboratory tests conducted since the 1970′s! What those tests revealed was nothing short of mind numbing… Extracts from the tree were shown to:

* Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer..

* The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!

* What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the Graviola tree selectivelyhunts

down and kills only cancer cells.. It does not harm healthy cells!

The amazing anti-cancer properties of the Graviola tree have been extensively researched–so why haven’t you heard anything about it? If Graviola extract is One of America ‘s biggest billion-dollar drug makers began a search for a cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest.

Various parts of the Graviola tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indi! ans in S outh America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the tree’s anti-cancerous properties–and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo. But that’s where the Graviola story nearly ended. The company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree–it’s completely natural, and so, under federal law, not patentable. There’s no way to make serious profits from it. It turns out the drug company invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the Graviola tree’s most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent, they’d be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the company could protect its profits–or even make back the millions it poured into research.

As the dream of huge profits evaporated, their testing on Graviola came to a screeching halt. Even worse, the company shelved the entire project and chose not to publish the findings of its research!

Luckily, however, there was one scientist from the Graviola research team whose conscience wouldn’t let him see such atrocity committed. Risking his career, he contacted a company that’s dedicated to harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle.

Miracle unleashed, When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to the news of Graviola,! they be gan tracking the research done on the cancer-killing tree. Evidence of the astounding effectiveness of Graviola–and its shocking cover-up–came in fast and furious….

….The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.” Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public…

Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-blind clinical trials–the typical benchmark mainstream doctors and journals use to judge a treatment’s value–were ever initiated….

….A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”

….The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

…A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers…. Seven years of silence broken–it’s finally here!
